Auxiliar técnico de Vanderlei Luxemburgo, Candinho avisava: o Brasil vai terminar o primeiro turno das Eliminatórias para a Copa do Mundo de 2002 em segundo lugar. E com o mundo caindo sobre Luxa após a conquista da medalha de bronze em Sidney, o próprio Candinho foi o treinador na partida que colocou a Seleção Brasileira no segundo lugar.

Em oito de outubro de 2000, a seleção venezuelana seria o adversário. O Brasil, ainda comandado por Luxa, vinha de goleada sobre a Bolívia, no Maracanã, por 5 a 0, e em Maracaíbo, contra a ainda inexpressiva Venezuela (como cresceu o futebol do país de Hugo Chávez!), a história não poderia ser diferente.

Romário, que não jogaria a Copa do Mundo na Ásia, com a seleção já sob o comando de Felipão, e que estava mordido por ficar de fora das Olimpíadas, comandou a festa e balançou a rede quatro vezes. Euller e Juninho Paulista completaram a festa vascaína.

O time da Colina, que dois meses mais tarde seria campeão da Copa João Havelange, deu o tom no time do meio pra frente. Juninho Pernambucano vestiu a nove, o Paulista ficou com a dez. Romário tinha a histórica camisa 11 e Euller, jogou com a sete.

Outra curiosidade da partida, foi a pouca presença de jogadores atuando fora do país. Dos 14 que participaram do jogo, apenas cinco eram ‘estrangeiros’. Da Itália vinham Cafu e Antônio Carlos, que ainda estava na Roma, além de Vampeta, jogador do Inter de Milão. Sylvinho estava no Arsenal da Inglaterra e Zé Roberto, no Bayer Leverkusen, da Alemanha.

Tons of goals to give morale

As an assistant for coach Vanderlei Luxembrugo, Candinho warned: Brazil will finish the first half of the Qualifiyng Tournament for the 2002 World Cup in second place. With the world’s weigth on Luxemburgo’s shoulders after he managed to win only a bronze medal in the Sydney Olympics, not good enough for the brazilians considering the national team never won gold, it took up to himself to put the Seleção on that second spot he predicted.

On october 8th of 2000, the national Venezuelan team would be the opponents. Brazil’s last game was under coach Luxemburgo, a pack of 5 goals against Bolívia at Maracanã Stadium, and in Maracaibo they would play the underdog local team (how grown is local football in the land of Hugo Chavez now!), the story could not be different.

Romário, that eventually would not play in the World Cup already under coach Felipão, was holding a grudge because of being left off the Olympic Tournament, lead the way with four goals. Euller and Juninho Paulista putted to bed the Vasco party. All of them were teamates at the carioca club.

Vasco would eventually be the champion for Copa João Havelange that year, and they set the tone of the team in the front. Juninho Pernambucano worn number 9, Paulista with number 10, Romário with his historic 11 and Euller with the lucky 7.

Another curious thing that happened in that game was the slim presence of players from abroad, a tendence in brazilian national squads lately. From the 14 the played only five of them had contracts with clubs from outside Brazil. From Italy Cafu and Antônio Carlos, still in Rome, besides Vampeta that played in Internazionale, Sylvinho was in Arsenal and Zé Roberto in german club Bayer Leverkusen.
